Aim of Course

A post graduate lactation specific academic program to provide a national standard for registered nurses and midwives and related health professionals. Specific focus on the South African market.

Course Structure

  • Self studying course
  • Course accredited by Wits University
  • Minimum 6 months
  • Maximum 2 years

Course Prerequisits

  • Nursing or allied health professional diploma or degree
  • Access to working with breastfeeding mothers while doing the course

Goals of the course

  • Specialised skills
  • Mainstream academic credits
  • Protection and recognition of the profession
  • Listing on the www.expectantmothersguide.co.za, SACLC website and in the Expectant Mothers Guide

Course requirements

  • 40 education hours within the last 2 years
  • 60 counseling hours after reviewing prescribed DVDs
  • 11 modules with assignments

Structure of the course

  • A self-directed learning program
  • Assignments
  • A paper for publication
  • Practical requirements in the form of counseling hours
  • A 3-hour written exam. A 70% pass mark is required in order to become a SACLC

Key competencies you will come out with after having done the course

  • Understand the scientific aspects of lactation
  • Analyse the specific components of maternal and infant nutrition
  • Address specific issues in mothers with special-needs children regarding maternal and infant immunology and infectious diseases
  • Identify maternal and infant pathological conditions that may affect breastfeeding outcomes
  • Discuss the effect of medical and social substances, as well as environmental effects on breast milk
  • Identify aspects of the South African National health Policy which impact on the specific needs of the diverse community in South Africa regarding certain factors like HIV, outstretched rural communities and cultural differences
  • Discuss the WHO code, ESPAGHAN and BFHI policies and implementation of it in South Africa, taking into account the different needs of a developing / developed country

Non-refundable registration fee
Balance payable in 6 months

Registration fee of R1 500 per year after the first year.
