A South African based course to provide minimum standards for the Perinatal Education Profession

Course Structure

  • Prerequisite – registered nurse and midwife / health sciences qualification
  • Course accredited by Wits University
  • 100 credits (1 000 hours)
  • Minimum of 6 months
  • Maximum 2 years

  • 7 Courses broken down intomodules
  • Each module has a prescribed learning activity – aimed at building up a perinatal education practice
  • Learning activities contribute to course mark

Course 1 – Perinatal Education

Course 2 – Expectant Parents:

  • pregnancy
  • labour & birth
  • unexpected outcomes & grieving process

Course 3 – Teaching Skills

Course 4 – Supportive techniques in childbirth

Course 5 – Promoting wellness

Course 6 – Postnatal Issues

Course 7 – Perinatal HIV (PEP program)

Practical Requirements

  • Births – observe 2
  • Births – support 2
  • Written birth reports 4
  • Attendance at CBEPF Roadshows minimum of 2 out of 3 a year
